Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that Canada and Malaysia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will enhance security cooperation between the two countries and help address the threats of terrorism, human smuggling and organized crime in Southeast Asia and beyond. He also announced Canadian support for four projects that will strengthen front line institutional capacity in Malaysia. The Prime Minister made the announcement during a bilateral visit to Malaysia.

“Canada and Malaysia have a long history of close and friendly bilateral relations,” said the Prime Minister.  “The support being announced today will enhance security cooperation between our two countries and further ensure the safety of all of our citizens.”

The MOU, which takes effect immediately, lays the foundation for Canada and Malaysia to reinforce and expand their cooperation on countering international crime and terrorism. The two countries will work together to enhance training partnerships among security experts on threats and challenges in Southeast Asia and beyond, including terrorism, human smuggling and organized crime.

Support for the four projects announced today will be provided through the Government of Canada’s Anti-Crime Capacity Building Program (ACCBP), and the Counter-Terrorism Capacity Building Program (CTCBP). Through increased cooperation and capacity building, these anti-human smuggling and counter-terrorism initiatives will strengthen front line institutional capacity in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
